What is an opportunist?

An "opportunist" is a population (fungi, bacteria, insects…) that takes advantage of a favourable environment to settle in, multiply and feed on it. It often develops when the natural defences of the affected organism are weakened — for genetic reasons or linked to context (water stress, deficiencies, nutritional imbalances, overcrowding…). This is typically the case in monocultures, where a single host plant, uniform and present in large numbers, offers ideal ground for it to spread.

Identification key : Vascular wilts (fungi and bacteria of the vessels) (Damage and symptoms on the host)

Scientific name : Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Tropical race 4

Other names : Foc TR4, Fusarium wilt of banana

Form of the fungus Fusarium oxysporum specialised on banana, able to affect the Cavendish variety that dominates world trade. It enters through the roots and invades the vessels of the pseudostem, which turn reddish brown; leaves yellow and the plant wilts. Its resting spores persist in soil for decades and spread with soil, water and planting material.

Crops affected : Banana
