What is an opportunist?

An "opportunist" is a population (fungi, bacteria, insects…) that takes advantage of a favourable environment to settle in, multiply and feed on it. It often develops when the natural defences of the affected organism are weakened — for genetic reasons or linked to context (water stress, deficiencies, nutritional imbalances, overcrowding…). This is typically the case in monocultures, where a single host plant, uniform and present in large numbers, offers ideal ground for it to spread.

Identification key : Root and collar rots (Damage and symptoms on the host)

Scientific name : Phytophthora cinnamomi

Other names : Ink disease of chestnut, Avocado root rot

Soil-borne oomycete found almost worldwide and able to affect thousands of woody and herbaceous species. It destroys feeder roots and the collar, causing yellowing, wilting and gradual decline. It spreads with soil water and is most active in warm, waterlogged soils; it is involved in ink disease of chestnut and avocado root rot.

Crops affected : Almond tree, Avocado, Beech, Chestnut, Eucalyptus, Fig, Holm oak, Oak, Pine, Pineapple, Walnut tree
