Agricultural urea [CH4N2O]
Synthetic nitrogen compound (CH4N2O) used as fertilizer, containing 46 % nitrogen.
Characteristics
- Labelled 46-0-0, it is one of the most widely used nitrogen fertilizers.
- In soil it converts to ammonium and can be lost as ammonia gas.
- Losses rise with moist surfaces, high pH, warmth and crop residue.
- Once about 5 cm into the soil, little is lost as ammonia.
Role in the preparation: It supplies soluble synthetic nitrogen to the preparation or the soil; it is not permitted in organic farming.
Caution: It absorbs moisture: store it dry in a closed container, avoid eye contact, and check local regulations before use.
