Insect — Hemiptera Confirmed pest

What is an opportunist?

An "opportunist" is a population (fungi, bacteria, insects…) that takes advantage of a favourable environment to settle in, multiply and feed on it. It often develops when the natural defences of the affected organism are weakened — for genetic reasons or linked to context (water stress, deficiencies, nutritional imbalances, overcrowding…). This is typically the case in monocultures, where a single host plant, uniform and present in large numbers, offers ideal ground for it to spread.

Identification key : Scale insects and mealybugs (Adult (and nymphs resembling the adult))

Scientific name : Comstockaspis perniciosa (also Quadraspidiotus perniciosus)

Other names : San Jose scale

San Jose scale (Comstockaspis perniciosa, formerly Quadraspidiotus perniciosus) is a tiny, grey, round armoured scale that lives attached to bark, leaves and fruit. Females give birth to mobile crawlers that spread and then settle to suck sap, with several generations per year. Fruit shows red spots around each scale, and infested branches weaken and may die back; it mainly affects apple, pear, peach and plum.

Crops affected : Almond tree, Apple tree, Hazelnut tree, Peach tree, Pear tree, Plum tree, Walnut tree
