What is an opportunist?

An "opportunist" is a population (fungi, bacteria, insects…) that takes advantage of a favourable environment to settle in, multiply and feed on it. It often develops when the natural defences of the affected organism are weakened — for genetic reasons or linked to context (water stress, deficiencies, nutritional imbalances, overcrowding…). This is typically the case in monocultures, where a single host plant, uniform and present in large numbers, offers ideal ground for it to spread.

Identification key : Legless larva with a head (weevils, seed beetles, bark beetles, wasps) (Larva) Weevils (Adult (and nymphs resembling the adult))

Scientific name : Curculionidae

Other names : snout beetle, black vine weevil

Weevils are beetles of the family Curculionidae, easy to recognise by the head extended into a snout bearing the mandibles at its tip. Females bore into plant tissue to lay eggs, and the white, curved, legless larvae develop inside seeds, fruit or stems, or in the soil feeding on roots. Adults leave notches along leaf margins and larvae hollow out grains, buds or roots, causing wilting; they affect strawberry, grapevine, potted ornamentals, citrus, palms, pulses and stored grain.

Crops affected : Bean, Coconut, Corn, Date (Date palm), Green / indoor plants, Lentil, Nursery roses and shrubs, Orange tree, Pea, Rice, Strawberry, Tempranillo, Wheat
