What is an opportunist?

An "opportunist" is a population (fungi, bacteria, insects…) that takes advantage of a favourable environment to settle in, multiply and feed on it. It often develops when the natural defences of the affected organism are weakened — for genetic reasons or linked to context (water stress, deficiencies, nutritional imbalances, overcrowding…). This is typically the case in monocultures, where a single host plant, uniform and present in large numbers, offers ideal ground for it to spread.

Identification key : Ants, wasps and gall wasps (Adult (and nymphs resembling the adult))

Scientific name : Formicidae

Other names : Argentine ant, leafcutter ant

Ants (family Formicidae) are social insects living in colonies with one or several queens and many workers, nesting in soil, under stones or in wood. Most species do little direct harm to crops, but they 'farm' aphids, scale insects and whiteflies to collect their honeydew and keep their natural enemies away. In tropical America, however, leafcutter ants (Atta, Acromyrmex) cut leaves and flowers to grow a fungus in the nest and can defoliate citrus, fruit trees and vegetables.

Crops affected : Apple tree, Bean, Cocoa, Coffee, Green / indoor plants, Lemon tree, Mandarin tree, Mango, Nursery roses and shrubs, Orange tree, Peach tree, Tomato
