Banana weevil

Banana weevil

Insect — Coleoptera

What is an opportunist?

An "opportunist" is a population (fungi, bacteria, insects…) that takes advantage of a favourable environment to settle in, multiply and feed on it. It often develops when the natural defences of the affected organism are weakened — for genetic reasons or linked to context (water stress, deficiencies, nutritional imbalances, overcrowding…). This is typically the case in monocultures, where a single host plant, uniform and present in large numbers, offers ideal ground for it to spread.

Identification key : Legless larva with a head (weevils, seed beetles, bark beetles, wasps) (Larva) Weevils (Adult (and nymphs resembling the adult))

Scientific name : Cosmopolites sordidus

Other names : Banana root borer

Nocturnal black weevil 10 to 15 mm long, present in nearly all banana and plantain growing areas. The larvae tunnel through the corm (rhizome) and the base of the pseudostem, weakening the plant's anchorage and nutrition. Affected plants produce smaller bunches and may topple in the wind.

Crops affected : Banana
