What is an opportunist?

An "opportunist" is a population (fungi, bacteria, insects…) that takes advantage of a favourable environment to settle in, multiply and feed on it. It often develops when the natural defences of the affected organism are weakened — for genetic reasons or linked to context (water stress, deficiencies, nutritional imbalances, overcrowding…). This is typically the case in monocultures, where a single host plant, uniform and present in large numbers, offers ideal ground for it to spread.

Identification key : Rots with mould (fungi and oomycetes) (Damage and symptoms on the host)

Scientific name : Penicillium digitatum, P. italicum

Other names : Penicillium rots

Two fungi (Penicillium digitatum, green mould, and P. italicum, blue mould) causing the main post-harvest rots of citrus. They enter through small skin wounds; the area softens and is covered with white then olive-green or bluish mould, and spores contaminate neighbouring fruit in crates and cold stores.

Crops affected : Grapefruit, Lemon tree, Mandarin tree, Orange tree

Source : Penicillium digitatum (PENIDI)[Overview] — EPPO Global Database — EPPO
