What is an opportunist?

An "opportunist" is a population (fungi, bacteria, insects…) that takes advantage of a favourable environment to settle in, multiply and feed on it. It often develops when the natural defences of the affected organism are weakened — for genetic reasons or linked to context (water stress, deficiencies, nutritional imbalances, overcrowding…). This is typically the case in monocultures, where a single host plant, uniform and present in large numbers, offers ideal ground for it to spread.

Identification key : Symphylans and other myriapods (All stages)

Scientific name : Scutigerella immaculata

Other names : Garden centipede

Small white arthropod 5 to 8 mm long, related to centipedes, with 12 pairs of legs as an adult. It lives in loose, moist soils rich in organic matter, moving through channels and pores, and gnaws root hairs and fine roots of seedlings, which grow poorly. It affects maize, vegetables and strawberry, and moves up to the surface when the soil is moist and mild.

Crops affected : Corn, Lettuce, Strawberry, Tomato
