What is an opportunist?

An "opportunist" is a population (fungi, bacteria, insects…) that takes advantage of a favourable environment to settle in, multiply and feed on it. It often develops when the natural defences of the affected organism are weakened — for genetic reasons or linked to context (water stress, deficiencies, nutritional imbalances, overcrowding…). This is typically the case in monocultures, where a single host plant, uniform and present in large numbers, offers ideal ground for it to spread.

Identification key : Vascular wilts (fungi and bacteria of the vessels) (Damage and symptoms on the host)

Scientific name : Fusarium oxysporum

Other names : Panama disease (banana)

Soil-borne fungus with many specialised forms, each adapted to a particular crop (tomato, melon, watermelon, bean, banana, carnation, etc.). It enters through the roots and invades the vascular system, causing leaf yellowing, often on one side, wilting and brown discoloration of the vessels visible when the stem is cut. Its resting spores can persist in soil for many years.

Crops affected : Banana, Bean, Bell pepper, Cucumber, Flowers (cut & garden), Melon, Tomato, Watermelon
