Regulatory status

⚠️ Tolerated (under conditions)

Chitosan is a basic substance approved in the EU (Implementing Regulations 563/2014 and 2022/456), but with purity specifications: food-grade quality and, in the case of chitosan, at least 85% purity and fungal origin. Chitosan obtained at home from crustacean shells does not meet these specifications; as a biostimulant for personal use, it does not require European authorization, but the shells are animal by-products (Regulation 1069/2009), and hydrochloric acid and caustic soda are hazardous substances.
