Plant vitality Broth Mineral

Broth

A liquid preparation obtained by cooking or boiling one or more ingredients (plant, mineral or organic matter) in water. The resulting liquid is used as is or diluted, usually after cooling and filtering. Unlike a decoction, which focuses on extracting a plant's active principles, a broth is the finished preparation obtained by cooking a mixture.

Process summary

1) Prepare and measure the ingredients. 2) Put them in water in a suitable container. 3) Bring to a boil and cook for the time given in the recipe, stirring. 4) Let cool, strain if needed and use undiluted or diluted as the recipe states.

Mineral mixture of copper, zinc and magnesium sulphates with borax and lime, from the Latin American agroecological tradition, supplying copper together with micronutrients (zinc, magnesium, boron).

Application

Application description: Sprayed on the canopy of tropical fruit trees (soursop, mango, avocado, plantain) and, diluted, on vegetables, according to the source.

Dose: Undiluted on fruit trees; on vegetables, diluted half and half with water (according to the source).

Tips

Preparation process

1. Container A: dissolve the copper, zinc and magnesium sulphates and the borax in 20 L of water.
2. Container B: mix the lime into 80 L of water and stir.
3. Pour solution A into B (never the other way round), stirring constantly.
4. Use the same day: it does not keep.

Colombia expressly lists “caldo Visosa” among permitted inputs, if the certification body recognises the need (Resolution 199 of 2016). Brazil permits copper as sulphate and in mixtures, hydrated lime and micronutrients (zinc, boron, magnesium), with the control body's approval and at most 6 kg of copper per hectare per year (MAPA Ordinance 52/2021, annexes V and VII). In Costa Rica, copper and trace elements are permitted with restrictions (Decree 29782-MAG). In the EU, a homemade preparation presented for plant-protection use is not authorised.
