Plant vitality Maceration Plant-based

Maceration

Cold extraction by prolonged soaking of the plant material in a liquid (water, oil or alcohol depending on use), without heat. The longer contact time than an infusion extracts compounds that cold water alone would dissolve too slowly.

Process summary

1) Chop or crush the plant material. 2) Fully submerge it in the chosen liquid, in a closed container. 3) Let it sit in a cool, dark place, stirring occasionally, for anywhere from several hours to several days depending on the preparation. 4) Strain and use the resulting liquid.

Maceration of 3–4 kg of leaves of several plants (Parthenium, Cuban oregano, anamú, basil, marigold, Lippia, epazote and neem) with lime, used on leafy and root vegetables in Havana.

Application

Application description: With a backpack sprayer, once a week from seedbed until 10–12 days before harvest of leafy vegetables (until harvest for root vegetables).

Dose: 50 L for about 1,950 m².

Tips

Lime irritates skin and eyes: gloves and goggles. Some of these plants (anamú, epazote, Parthenium) are toxic or allergenic: handle with gloves. Before any use, check your country's regulations: in the EU, a homemade preparation presented for plant-protection use is not authorised.

Preparation process

1. Cut up the leaves and put them in a 50 L container with water.
2. Macerate for 6–8 hours, stirring regularly.
3. Leave to settle for another 24 hours.
4. Mix again, add 16 g of lime per litre and filter through fine mesh.

Ingredients

  • Water ⓘ — 13.209 gal
  • Slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) [Ca(OH)₂] ⓘ

  • Fine cloth for filtering

Preparation time

About 30 hours; use within 2–3 days.
