Indigenous Microorganisms (IMO)

Indigenous Microorganisms (IMO)

Isolation of native forest microorganisms from cooked rice

Inoculants Fermentation

Fermentation

Biological transformation of the plant material by microorganisms (yeasts, bacteria) in total or partial absence of oxygen, releasing and transforming active compounds over a longer period than the other techniques (days to weeks).

Process summary

1) Chop the plant material and submerge it in water, in a wide, non-airtight container (to let gases escape). 2) Stir daily during fermentation. 3) Let ferment from several days to several weeks, depending on ambient temperature, until it stops foaming. 4) Strain and dilute before use — the undiluted product can be very concentrated.

🟠 Not prohibited

A technique from Korean Natural Farming (KNF) for capturing indigenous microorganisms from a nearby healthy forest or soil near the crop, using cooked rice as a culture medium. The resulting mixture is used to inoculate the soil, activate composting, and improve the microbial community around the roots.

Application

Application description: Dilute the IMO (mixed with bran) in irrigation water at a rate of approximately 2–5%, or incorporate it directly into the soil or compost in thin layers. Apply it preferably at the base of the plants or mixed with the top layer of soil in seedbeds.

Regulatory status

🟠 Not prohibited (made on the farm for own use)

No European text names “Indigenous Microorganisms (IMO)”. Made on the farm for one’s own use, it falls under no authorisation regime: Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 and, in Spain, Royal Decree 506/2013 only cover products placed on the market. In organic farming, Regulation (EU) 2018/848 (Annex II, Part I, point 1.9.6) generally allows preparations of micro-organisms to improve soil condition or nutrient availability: the certification body will decide; there is no text specific to this preparation. Its ingredients appear on the organic input lists of several countries: see each country’s page.
