Fish amino acids (FAA)

Fish amino acids (FAA)

Liquid amino acid concentrate obtained by fermenting fish byproducts with sugar or molasses

Biostimulants Fermentation

Fermentation

Biological transformation of the plant material by microorganisms (yeasts, bacteria) in total or partial absence of oxygen, releasing and transforming active compounds over a longer period than the other techniques (days to weeks).

Process summary

1) Chop the plant material and submerge it in water, in a wide, non-airtight container (to let gases escape). 2) Stir daily during fermentation. 3) Let ferment from several days to several weeks, depending on ambient temperature, until it stops foaming. 4) Strain and dilute before use — the undiluted product can be very concentrated.

✅ Authorised (some countries)

It provides free amino acids, peptides, and organic nitrogen that are rapidly absorbed by the leaves and roots. It stimulates vegetative growth, improves shoot and leaf development, and promotes beneficial microbial activity in the soil.

Application

When to use: Routinely and occasionally

Development stage: Growth Flowering

Application description: Dilute in water and apply as a drench at the base of the plant or spray onto the foliage during the vegetative growth stage, preferably in the evening to prevent the photodegradation of the amino acids.

Dose: 1–2 ml per liter of water (foliar application); 5–10 ml/L for irrigation

Fermented preparation made from fish byproducts and molasses for on-farm use as a biostimulant. Its production on the farm for on-farm use does not require European authorization (Regulation 2019/1009 only regulates commercialization), but fish offal is an animal byproduct subject to Regulation (EC) 1069/2009. In organic farming, fish meal is listed among the animal-derived products permitted in Annex II of Regulation 2021/1165, subject to certain conditions. Its ingredients also appear on the official lists of inputs permitted in organic farming of: Burundi, Colombia, India, Kenya, South Korea, Peru, Philippines, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda. Depending on the country, some are only allowed under conditions (certification body approval, maximum doses): see each country's page.
