Mixture of coconut vinegar, muscovado sugar and water placed in hanging bottles, described by the Agricultural Training Institute of the Philippines under the name “Natural Insect Attractant”; the contents of the bottles show which insects are present in the plot.

Application

Application description: Hang the bottles in fruit trees, vines or near crops (rice, maize, banana, fruit and high-value vegetables, according to the source). Check the bottles and renew the mixture as needed.

Dose: About 100 bottles per hectare, spaced 10 × 10 m (according to the source).

Tips

Coconut vinegar can be replaced by another food-grade vinegar and muscovado by brown sugar. The mixture attracts insects without distinguishing between species, including beneficial ones: keep an eye on what the bottles catch. Before any use, check your country's regulations on plant protection products.

Preparation process

1. Mix the sugar, water and vinegar in a basin or other suitable container.
2. Cut two opposite openings of about 5 × 5 cm (2 square inches) in each bottle.
3. Pour a little mixture into each bottle, not enough to spill through the openings.
4. Hang the bottles with rope or tie-wire from fruit trees or vines; for low-growing crops, pour the mixture into coconut shells or bowls placed near the plants.
