Biostimulants Fermentation

Fermentation

Biological transformation of the plant material by microorganisms (yeasts, bacteria) in total or partial absence of oxygen, releasing and transforming active compounds over a longer period than the other techniques (days to weeks).

Process summary

1) Chop the plant material and submerge it in water, in a wide, non-airtight container (to let gases escape). 2) Stir daily during fermentation. 3) Let ferment from several days to several weeks, depending on ambient temperature, until it stops foaming. 4) Strain and dilute before use — the undiluted product can be very concentrated.

Traditional liquid ferment from Indian organic farming, rich in fermentation micro-organisms (yeasts and lactic acid bacteria) and soluble nutrients.

Application

Application description: Diluted in water, as a foliar spray; with irrigation water (drip or flood); to soak seeds or dip seedling roots before planting (20 minutes; turmeric or ginger rhizomes and sugarcane setts, 30 minutes).

Dose: Indicative: 3 litres in 100 litres of water (3%) as a spray; about 50 litres per hectare with irrigation; 3% for seed soaking. As a foliar spray, every 10 to 15 days depending on the crop stage.

In India, the NPOP expressly allows products prepared on the farm from local plants, animals and micro-organisms (§3.1.10(iv)); this preparation is promoted by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU). Its ingredients (manure, urine, milk and dairy products, plant materials, sugar) also appear on the official lists of other countries. In the EU, a fertiliser made on the farm for own use needs no authorisation (Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 only covers fertilisers placed on the market); in organic production, manure from factory farming is prohibited (Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021/1165, Annex II).
