Wheat or rice bran
Milling by-product made of the outer layers of the wheat or rice grain.
Characteristics
- Wheat bran contains about 14–19 % protein, much fibre and some starch.
- Rice bran is fattier, about 17 % lipids, and rich in phosphorus.
- Supplies phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and other minerals.
- Classic carrier for lactic acid bacteria and yeasts in bokashi.
Role in the preparation: It serves as a carrier and food for microorganisms in bokashi and fermented solid inoculants.
Caution: It goes rancid and absorbs moisture easily: store it cool and dry, use it fresh, and avoid breathing the dust while mixing.
