Biostimulants Fermentation Plant-based

Fermentation

Biological transformation of the plant material by microorganisms (yeasts, bacteria) in total or partial absence of oxygen, releasing and transforming active compounds over a longer period than the other techniques (days to weeks).

Process summary

1) Chop the plant material and submerge it in water, in a wide, non-airtight container (to let gases escape). 2) Stir daily during fermentation. 3) Let ferment from several days to several weeks, depending on ambient temperature, until it stops foaming. 4) Strain and dilute before use — the undiluted product can be very concentrated.

Liquid ferment from Thailand's Land Development Department (LDD): low-grade raw milk, juicy fruit and molasses ferment for 15 days with the Super LDD 2 microbial activator, which the LDD distributes to farmers. According to the LDD, the product contains auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, amino acids and humic acids.

Application

Application description: Foliar spray or watering, diluted.

Dose: According to the LDD: field crops 3.75 L in 1,250 L of water per hectare, every 10 days before flowering; fruit trees 20 tablespoons in 100 L of water, monthly before flowering; rice 12 tablespoons in 60 L of water at days 30, 50 and 60.

Tips

Molasses can be replaced by 5 kg of sugar or 10 L of cane juice. A new batch can be started with 2 L of 5-7-day-old bio-extract, one sachet of activator and the same ingredients. The LDD gives no precautions: work with clean containers and avoid milk or fruit of doubtful origin.

Preparation process

1. Chop the fruit.
2. In a lidded drum, mix the milk, fruit and molasses.
3. Dissolve the activator in a little water and add it; stir well.
4. Close loosely and leave to ferment for 15 days in the shade, stirring now and then.
5. It is ready when bubbling slows, the alcohol smell fades and the pH falls to 3-4. Strain before use.

Bio-inputs in Brazil Bio-preparations authorised in Brazil

Authorised in Thailand and Brazil. Thailand: the recipe and the Super LDD 2 activator come from the Land Development Department (LDD), a public body that promotes them among farmers; bio-extracts made on the farm for own use need no registration, which is only required to sell fertilisers (Fertilizer Act B.E. 2518). Brazil: Law 15.070 of 2024 allows bio-inputs to be produced on the farm for own use, without registration and without sale. Use as a fertiliser or biostimulant, without claiming any effect against pests or diseases.
